Homer
S. Cummings
Democrat
Cummings, was a two term Mayor of Stamford around the
turn of the century. He rose to national prominence
as Chairman of The Democratic National Committee and
then Attorney General of The United States under FDR:
1933-39. He founded the Stamford law firm of Cummings
& Lockwood and Cummings Park is named in his memory.He
is buried in Woodland Cemetary.

States President, Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, campaigns
in Stamford in 1892 at the Luther Street Fire Station.
Cleveland was out of office and after four years of
Republican leadership quashed the reelection hopes of
Pres. Harrison, who had alienated many in his own party.
Cleveland is sixth from the left, and stands next to

H. Olmstead
James
H. Olmstead, pictured above, was Chairman of the Stamford
Democrats for 40 years--from the civil war era until approx.
1895. Olmstead was a practicing attorney and served over the
years in many public positions, including State's Attorney,
Probate Judge and State Representative. He was central to
many key events in Stamford history, including the passage
